Our approach to VAPT

Testing that leads to
practical remediation.

A useful VAPT engagement does more than list vulnerabilities. It shows where risk exists, how serious it is and what needs to be fixed first.

Procain combines vulnerability assessment, penetration testing and remediation support to help organisations understand their exposure with clarity.

We test against the environment you actually operate, rank findings by real risk and retest after remediation to confirm closure.

FAQ

Questions we get asked

What is VAPT (vulnerability assessment and penetration testing)?

VAPT is a security test that finds weaknesses in your systems and then checks how far an attacker could actually get by exploiting them. It combines two activities. A vulnerability assessment identifies and ranks known weaknesses across your environment. Penetration testing then has a tester try to exploit those weaknesses the way a real attacker would.

The idea is simple: you find the gaps in your security before someone else does.

Why is VAPT important for a business?

Security tools tell you what you have installed. They don't tell you whether an attacker can get past them.

VAPT shows you the weaknesses that actually exist in your applications, networks and cloud environments, how serious each one is, and what an attacker could reach through them. That lets you fix the most dangerous issues first instead of guessing.

It also matters for compliance and customers. Many regulators, auditors and enterprise clients now expect regular VAPT reports as evidence that you test your security, not just that you own security products.

How much does VAPT cost?

There is no single price that makes sense for every organisation.

Cost depends on how many applications, servers, network ranges, APIs (application programming interfaces) and cloud accounts the testers need to cover, how complex each one is, how much manual testing the scope needs, and which compliance requirements the report must support. Providers usually price per asset, per application, or as a fixed fee for a defined scope.

A single website with a login page is a very different job from a banking application with dozens of user roles and connected systems. We would rather understand your scope first and quote for it clearly than give you a headline price that changes once testing starts.

How often should a business run VAPT?

Most organisations should run VAPT at least once a year, and again after any significant change, such as launching a new application, releasing a major update, moving to the cloud or changing network architecture.

Some businesses need to test more often. Companies that release code frequently, handle payment or financial data, or fall under regulators such as RBI or SEBI often have stricter expectations. PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard), for example, requires penetration testing at least once every 12 months and after significant changes.

A yearly test only tells you about your security on the day of the test. Your environment keeps changing, so your testing should keep pace with it.

What's included in a VAPT report?

A good VAPT report should work for two audiences: management, who need to understand the risk, and your technical team, who need to fix it.

It should include an executive summary, the scope and testing method, and a list of findings ranked by severity. For each finding, the report should explain what the weakness is, where testers found it, how they exploited it, what an attacker could do with it and how to fix it.

A report that only lists scanner output with no evidence or clear fix guidance leaves your team doing the provider's work.

How long does a VAPT engagement take?

It depends on the scope.

An engagement usually moves through scoping, testing, reporting and retesting. A small web application takes far less time than an organisation with several applications, internal and external networks, APIs and cloud environments.

Your team's readiness also affects the timeline. Testers need access, test accounts and a named contact before they can start. We would rather agree the scope first and give you a realistic schedule than promise a number of days before we know what needs testing.

Does VAPT cover web applications, networks, APIs, mobile apps, and cloud environments?

Yes, but each one needs its own testing approach.

Web application testing looks at issues such as broken access controls, injection flaws and weak session handling. Network testing looks at exposed services, misconfigurations and weak points between systems. API testing checks how the application handles requests it doesn't expect. Mobile app testing covers the app itself and the servers it talks to. Cloud testing reviews configurations, identity and access settings, and exposed resources.

The scope document should list every asset the testers will cover. If an asset isn't in the scope, nobody tests it.

What compliance frameworks does VAPT support (ISO 27001, PCI DSS, SOC 2, RBI, SEBI CSCRF)?

VAPT supports most major security frameworks, but each one treats it differently.

PCI DSS directly requires penetration testing. ISO 27001 and SOC 2 (Service Organization Control 2) require you to manage technical vulnerabilities, and auditors commonly accept VAPT reports as evidence. RBI's cybersecurity requirements and SEBI's Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Framework expect regulated entities to run regular VAPT and act on the findings.

But a VAPT report does not make you compliant by itself. Auditors also want to see that you fixed the findings, retested them, and have policies and processes around vulnerability management.

What's the difference between vulnerability assessment and penetration testing?

A vulnerability assessment finds and ranks weaknesses across your systems, mostly with scanning tools. It gives you breadth: a wide view of known issues.

Penetration testing goes further. A tester tries to exploit the weaknesses to prove whether an attacker could actually break in and what they could reach. It gives you depth: evidence of real impact.

A vulnerability assessment on its own can flag hundreds of issues without telling you which ones matter. Penetration testing on its own can miss issues outside the tester's path. VAPT combines the two, which is why most organisations and regulators ask for both.

What's the difference between black box, white box, and grey box testing?

The difference is how much information the testers get before they start.

In black box testing, testers get no internal information, just like an outside attacker. In white box testing, testers get full access to source code, architecture and credentials, which lets them test more thoroughly. In grey box testing, testers get partial information, such as a normal user login, which reflects an attacker who has stolen an account or an insider with limited access.

Grey box testing is often the most practical choice because it balances realism with coverage. The right approach depends on what you want to learn from the test.

What's the difference between VAPT and red teaming?

VAPT aims to find as many weaknesses as possible in a defined set of systems. Your team usually knows about the test, and the testers report every finding.

Red teaming aims to test whether your organisation can detect and stop a realistic attack. The red team pursues a specific goal, such as reaching sensitive data, and may use any route to get there, including phishing and social engineering. Usually, only a few people in your organisation know the exercise is happening.

Most organisations should start with VAPT. Red teaming makes more sense once you regularly fix your VAPT findings and have a security monitoring and response team to test.

Does a VAPT provider need current CERT-In empanelment, and how can you verify it independently?

It depends on who is asking for the report. Many Indian regulators and government bodies require audits by a CERT-In empanelled organisation, and many enterprise clients ask for it too.

Don't rely on a logo on a website or a certificate in a sales deck. CERT-In publishes its list of empanelled auditing organisations on its own website. Check that the provider's legal name appears on the current list, since empanelment is valid for a set period and needs renewal.

Also ask whether the testers who will work on your engagement are the provider's own staff. Empanelment belongs to the organisation, so the work should come from the organisation you checked.

Does VAPT combine manual testing with automated scanning, or is it scan-only?

This is one of the most important questions to ask any VAPT provider.

Automated scanners find known weaknesses quickly, but they miss a lot. They can't understand how your application is meant to work, so they miss flaws in business logic, broken access controls between user roles, and weaknesses that only become dangerous when an attacker chains them together. Skilled manual testers find these.

Some providers run a scanner, put their logo on the output and call it VAPT. Before you sign, ask how much of the engagement is manual testing, who does it, and whether the report shows evidence that testers actually exploited the findings.

Is a free retest included after vulnerabilities are fixed, or does it cost extra?

Ask this before you sign, because providers handle it differently.

A retest confirms that your team's fixes actually worked. Without it, you only have a list of problems and no proof they are closed. Auditors and regulators often want to see that proof.

Confirm whether the price includes a retest, how many rounds it covers, how long you have to fix issues before the retest window closes, and whether you receive an updated report showing the closed findings.

What rules of engagement does Procain follow to protect your live systems during testing?

We agree the rules of engagement with you in writing before any testing starts.

They list the systems in scope and the ones off-limits, the testing windows, the techniques our testers avoid (such as tests that could crash a system or delete data) and the contacts on both sides if something goes wrong. Our testers stop and call your team immediately if they find a critical weakness or see signs that someone else has already broken in.

Where possible, we test critical systems in a staging environment that mirrors production. When we need to test production, we schedule the work at times that suit your business and make sure your team has current backups and someone ready to respond.
