FAQ
Questions we get asked
What are managed cloud services?
Managed cloud services means handing over the day-to-day running of your cloud environment to a specialist provider. The provider operates your infrastructure on platforms such as Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure after it's built or migrated.
The provider monitors your cloud resources, responds to incidents, applies patches and updates, manages backups and disaster recovery, keeps security settings in good shape and controls costs. A provider that specialises in this work is often called a cloud managed service provider, or cloud MSP.
The aim is simple: your cloud environment stays secure, available and cost-effective, without your team having to manage every detail.
What's included in a managed cloud services package?
A managed cloud services package usually includes round-the-clock monitoring and alerting, incident handling and troubleshooting, and patching and updates for servers, operating systems and databases. It also covers backup management and disaster recovery, and security management, such as access reviews and configuration checks.
Most packages also include cost management, which means tracking spending, removing waste and recommending cheaper options, along with performance tuning, scaling and centralised logging.
Good packages add regular reports that show what the provider did, how your environment performed and where you can improve. Check whether security monitoring, compliance support and changes to your environment are included or charged separately.
How much do managed cloud services cost?
There is no single price that makes sense for every organisation.
Cost depends on the size and complexity of your cloud environment, how many platforms you use, how many resources need managing, the support hours you need and whether security monitoring and cost optimisation are included. Providers usually charge a flat monthly fee, a fee based on the number of resources they manage, or a percentage of your monthly cloud bill.
The management fee is separate from what you pay AWS or Azure. Good managed services often lower that cloud bill enough to offset much of the fee. We would rather understand your environment first and quote for a clear scope than give you a headline price that changes later.
Why should a business use managed cloud services instead of managing its cloud environment in-house?
Running a cloud environment well takes a wide range of skills, including architecture, security, networking, databases, automation and cost management. It also takes round-the-clock attention. Few businesses can hire and keep a team that covers all of that.
A managed cloud provider gives you a team of certified specialists and 24/7 monitoring for a predictable monthly cost, usually less than building the same capability in-house. The provider also brings tools and experience from managing many similar environments.
It also frees your own team. Instead of spending their time on patching, alerts and cost reports, your engineers can focus on building products and improving your business.
Does managed cloud services include backup and disaster recovery?
Yes. Backup and disaster recovery are a core part of how we manage your cloud environment.
We plan your backups based on how much data you can afford to lose and how quickly you need to recover. We check snapshots and backup jobs regularly and test that we can actually restore from them, because a backup you've never restored is a risk, not a safeguard. We also keep your disaster recovery plan ready and up to date.
For businesses that need more protection, our cloud disaster recovery service can replicate critical systems to another region or platform, so you can keep running even if a whole cloud region has problems.
Can managed cloud services be added after a cloud migration is already complete?
Yes. Many clients come to us after migrating on their own or with another provider.
We start by assessing your environment: its architecture, security settings, backups, monitoring and costs. That shows us what's working and what needs fixing. We then close the most important gaps, set up our monitoring and documentation, and agree how we'll support you day to day.
Environments migrated in a hurry often carry hidden problems, such as oversized resources, missing backups or overly broad access. Our onboarding assessment usually finds these early, and fixing them often lowers your cloud bill as well as your risk.
What's FinOps, and is it included in managed cloud services?
FinOps, short for cloud financial operations, is the practice of managing cloud spending as carefully as any other business cost. It brings finance, technology and business teams together, so everyone understands what the cloud costs and why.
Cost optimisation is part of our managed cloud service. We tag resources so you can see which team, product or project spends what, and set budgets and alerts so overspending gets caught early. We rightsize resources that are larger than needed and remove anything unused. We also recommend reserved capacity and savings plans for steady workloads.
We also help you forecast future cloud costs, so your cloud budget becomes something you plan, not something you discover at the end of each month.
Does managed cloud services include infrastructure-as-code (e.g., Terraform) management?
Yes. We manage infrastructure as code, and we use it to build and change cloud environments whenever it fits.
Infrastructure as code means defining your cloud resources in files, using tools such as Terraform, AWS CloudFormation or Azure Bicep, instead of setting them up by hand. It makes your environment consistent, repeatable and easy to rebuild, and every change gets recorded.
We keep your infrastructure code under version control and review changes before they go live. We also check for drift, which happens when someone changes resources by hand so they no longer match the code. If your environment was built manually, we can bring it under code gradually, starting with the most important parts.
What's the difference between managed cloud services and cloud migration services?
Cloud migration services move your applications, data and infrastructure into the cloud. Migration is a project with a clear start and finish.
Managed cloud services run your cloud environment after it's there. They're ongoing and cover monitoring, maintenance, security, backups, cost management and support.
Many businesses use both, one after the other: a migration to get into the cloud, then managed services to keep it running well. Using the same provider for both means the team running your environment already knows how it was built.
What's the difference between SaaS and managed services?
Software as a service (SaaS) is a finished software product you use over the internet, such as Microsoft 365 or Salesforce. The software vendor builds, hosts, maintains and secures everything behind it. You only manage your users and your data.
Managed services means a third party runs your own IT environment for you. With managed cloud services, that means your own cloud infrastructure, applications and data on platforms such as AWS or Azure.
The difference is ownership. With SaaS, you use someone else's product. With managed services, the environment is yours, and you pay a specialist to run it.
What's the difference between a general MSP and a cloud-specialized MSP?
A general managed service provider (MSP) looks after everyday IT, such as helpdesk support, laptops, office networks, on-premises servers and Microsoft 365.
A cloud-specialised MSP focuses on cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure and Google Cloud. Its engineers hold platform certifications and work with cloud-native tools every day, including infrastructure as code, containers, automation and cloud cost management.
If most of your systems run in the cloud, a cloud-specialised MSP brings deeper expertise. If your IT is a mix of office systems and cloud, look for a provider with both skill sets, so one team understands your whole environment.
Does managed cloud services include 24/7 monitoring, or only business-hours support?
Our managed cloud service includes 24/7 monitoring and alerting.
We monitor the health, performance and security of your cloud resources around the clock, using the platforms' own monitoring tools alongside ours. When something goes wrong, such as a failed service, a resource running out of capacity or unusual activity, our engineers respond whatever the time.
We also collect logs centrally, so we can investigate incidents quickly and spot patterns that point to bigger problems.
Does managed cloud services include patching and updates for managed databases and servers?
Yes. Patching and vulnerability management are part of our managed cloud service.
For virtual servers, we apply operating system and software patches on a regular schedule, during maintenance windows we agree with you. For managed database services such as Amazon RDS or Azure SQL Database, the cloud provider applies routine patches, and we control when that happens and track the database versions you run.
We also watch for versions approaching end of support and plan major upgrades well in advance, so an expiring version never forces a rushed change. Urgent security fixes get applied quickly, in agreement with you.
What's the guaranteed incident response time, and is it backed by a financial SLA penalty?
Our agreement sets out response times in writing for each priority level, so you know exactly what to expect before you sign.
A critical incident, such as a production outage, gets our fastest response, and less urgent issues get proportionately longer response times. Because we monitor your environment 24/7, we often detect incidents and start work before your team notices. We report our performance against these commitments every month.
If we miss an agreed response time, the agreement sets out what happens, including service credits. As an ISO 20000-1 certified company, we run our services to an internationally recognised standard for IT service management.
Can Procain's managed cloud services help with compliance and audit reporting?
Yes. Most compliance frameworks ask for evidence that your controls keep working over time, and running your environment day to day puts us in the best position to provide it.
We keep centralised logs of activity across your cloud environment, record every change we make and review user access regularly. We also track patching, backups and security findings. When an audit comes up, we turn these records into the reports and evidence auditors ask for, whether you're working towards ISO 27001, SOC 2 (Service Organization Control 2), India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act or RBI and SEBI requirements.
As an ISO 27001 certified company, we know what auditors expect to see. Managed services don't make you compliant on their own, because your policies and internal processes matter too, but they make sure the cloud side of your evidence is complete and ready.
